Joshua Tree National Park, California – Volunteer Vacations 2022

March 20, 2022 - March 26, 2022

Trip Navigation

Come enjoy springtime in the desert! Two distinct desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado, come together in Joshua Tree National Park. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California. On this trip, join National Park Service (NPS) staff and work together with fellow volunteers to build and repair section of trails to improve the visitor hiking experiences in Joshua Tree National Park. The trail work will range from assisting with dry stonework, building structures out of dimensional lumber, and brushing trail corridors that have vegetation growing into the trail. The crews will hike between .5-3 miles from trailhead to project site, depending on the project that is assigned. Crews should expect to commute by personal vehicles / carpooling from basecamp to trail heads and be prepared for a full day of work in warm, dry and sunny conditions.

AHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Cahuilla, Serrano, Chemehuevi, and Mohave peoples past and present. We honor the land itself, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations, and those who continue to steward these lands today. AHS invites all volunteers to join us in our commitment to support and amplify the work of Indigenous communities as they work to dismantle the systems of oppression that these communities continue to face today.

Area and Attractions

Joshua Tree National Park's nearly 800,000 acres were set aside to protect the unique assembly of natural resources brought together by the junction of three of California's ecosystems: the Colorado Desert, the Mojave Desert, and the Little San Bernardino Mountains. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California. Come explore for yourself! The towns of Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms host local farmers markets on the weekends. Palm Springs, which is a 45-minute drive, hosts a weekly street market with music, local food, and crafts. There are options to attend local art and music venues while supporting the areas local economy by visiting the many small businesses along the northern border of the park. A 1-hour drive in the desert will take visitors to the area of Pioneertown, a town that was once a living western used in old TV shows and movies. For those that seek adventure; the park provides climbing, hiking, and many photographic opportunities.

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will camp in Joshua Tree National Park. Campsite options are very beautiful; surrounded by either Joshua trees, rock formations, or both. Volunteer groups will either be accommodated at one of the park's administrative group campgrounds or a public group campsite. Water fill-up locations are dispersed throughout the park, but limited. Campsites have primitive restrooms that are either pit toilets or portable toilets. Showers are not available throughout the week but will be available at the end of the trip.

Travel

Palm Springs International Airport in Palm Springs, CA is the closest major airport. Airport pickup is not provided for this trip. Volunteers are responsible for transportation to and from camp and the work site. Carpooling can be arranged once the project is confirmed.
